The Division of Medical Oncology of the Department of Medicine, headed by Professor Paul Ruff, is situated at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. It is one of only two Medical Oncology Units in South Africa, the other being at the University of Pretoria, headed by Professor Lydia Dreosti, a previous member of our Unit. Dr. Georgia Demetriou is the Acting Head of the Division with Dr. Ashraf Wadee being a Senior Specialist. Specialist/Fellows in the Division include Dr. Omondi Ogude, Dr. Jason Naicker and Dr. Ronwyn van Eeden.
It however, provides treatment for cancer patients with both solid tumor and haematological malignancies throughout the University of Witwatersrand Academic Complex including all adult cancer patients requiring Medical Oncology care from Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and Helen Joseph Hospital. In addition, it provides cancer care to patients from the East and West Rand as well as seeing patients from North West Province, southern Mpumalanga and northern Free State and KwaZulu Natal.
The Outpatient Clinic in Area 495 sees over 2000 patients including over 200 new patients every month. Most of these patients receive chemotherapy treatment in the Clinic as Outpatients with only very ill patients and those requiring infusional chemotherapy especially Acute Leukaemia patients being admitted to the Inpatient Ward, Area 594. The Inpatient Ward has 21 beds including 5 isolation cubicles, 4 semi-isolation beds in cubicle A and 12 general beds in cubicles B and C.
The Division of Medical Oncology has an extensive research programme in both Clinical Oncology Trials and Basic Sciences. Numerous Research Clinical Trials in various malignancies including Breast Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Lung Cancer, Liver and Pancreatic Cancer as well as Haematological Malignancies have been run in the Unit for many years some of which have resulted in major research publications.
In addition, the Medical Oncology Research Laboratory run by Dr. Clem Penny, is involved in a number of projects with a particular emphasis on Colorectal Cancer.
